“American Express – My Life, My Card” Commericals
June 17, 2006
We saw it a couple of years ago when niche directors like Wong Kar-Wai, Ang Lee, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu were offered to create short and unique films featuring cars from BMW. "The Hire" featured 8 films with various directors, which all starred Clive Owen, were highly entertaining and allowed people to forget that they were watching a long ass commercial about BMW. Since its success, Nissan tried to capitalize and produce their own short film with John Bruno (directed True Lies, T2: Judgement Day). American Express recently followed suit with their own unique 2 minute short films featuring directors and "sell outs" (im just kidding, id do the same in a heartbeat) Wes Anderson (Royal Tenanbaums, Bottle Rocket, The Life Aquatic) and M Night Shyamalan (Sixth Sense, Signs, The Village). Although not as entertaining as BMW's or Nissan's films, the two directors manage to put their own trademark/style in their commercials and did an excellent job not cramming American Express down our throats.
